Vintage Youth Christmas Dec 2025
A hardy 10 made it to brunch at the Base Bar but only 6 were inspired by Lesley’s enthusiasm to explore further.
17K and 3 indulgent stops.
Breadsall for coffee and all were tempted to climb the bridleway to Drum Hill followed by a descent o the Bouquet wine bar.
Its party time with 16 at Gisborne, all contributing and never a moments silence. Happy Christmas all

Snow as we descened the old man and beautiful sunshine as we climbed up the valley to Scafell then downpours when we crossed the black sail pass and waded through rivers-typical lake district
Chrome hill from Longnor June 2025

Great parking in Longnor with a choice of 2 coffee shops.
Walk up through the village and push through brambles down to the foot of chrome hill. Dom couldn’t resist the challenge of the climb. Then up the valley for a picnic with great views. Temptation to join Enzo and Otis swimming. Back to Longnor and the welcoming beer at the cheshire cheese.

Castleton explores April 2025
Four vans short break at the castleton caravan site
HJLAMKRM.
Despite some intrepidation great ridge walks always including coffee and a pub in keeping with tradition
started with the lower hope circuit then ambitious
Day 1 14k 526 ascent Lose hill via Castleton high street and along the ridge to ascend mamtor. Optional descents via the broken road or past Peveril castle in cave dale.
Day 216k 427 ascent off to Hope and a fab bikers cafe then up onto Win Hill followed by a descent through the forest with views of Edale. There was even a bus for those with tired legs.

Lesleys birthday and we had to earn our pre theatre food at no 46.
Take the right off the A^ and push through the brambles to follow the river to duffield church, up over eaton bank to little eaton and Barry fitchs butchers for delights. Ruth tumbled and lay faint on the locals steps, just a shoulder subluxation
Then a quick try of prosecco and the new wine bar and back allow the river to the A38
Winster, stanton moor cicuit April 2025

Parking in the winster layby then down through the village and up onto stanton moor.Welcomed by the colourful peacocks at the campsite, earls greys tower, nine sisters, not forgetting the king stone, and of course a pint at the druids inn before down and up to complete the circuit. Finishing with a sarnie at the miners arm

Anglesey northern explore
Various trip including a visit to Beaumaris and along the coast to St Seiriols priory and the pigeon house then down to the point. Later up to Holyhead to see Moleys brewery and a coast walk towards rhosneigr
Anglesey red wharf bay
we stayed on a 5 plot site overlooking red wharf bay. Lovely walk down to the beach, very flat so the tide goes way out. Lovely white pub and coffee shop L&A walked the coast to red wharf bay with the sailing club

4 dales walk from Litton-May 2024

Meet at Yonderman’s Cafe for Coffee at 0930 and then park up at Litton for 1000.
This seemed to be the police meet up as well
The walking started in Tideswell Dale, next alongside the River Wye is Miller’s Dale and Water-cum-Jolly Dale, then finally to Cressbrook Dale.
Past the litton mill now converted into smart apartments and sadly the bridge yet to be repaired in cressbrook dale. Lots of stories form Daren’s past with various ‘naughty’ exploits
Appears we going to do a field study and visit a factory and sewage works. Hopefully the shafts and the tunnel will not be a problem.
Luds Church from Gradbach April 2024

A fab walk down the river to a microbrewery (alas not visited) then up through the forest to the magic of luds church. Very mysterious made better for the wet greenery and misty feel
There is no coffee stop I’m afraid, so it will mean flasks and snacks.
Bradgate Park explore March 2024

Led my Grahame-Friday March 1st and a leisurely ramble around Bradgate park one of Leicestershire finest country parks and know as a Medieval Deer park. Famed for its fascinating geology and ancient oaks with some up to 900 yrs old. Also the 16th century ruins of Lady Jane Greys house who was queen for 9 days. We may even see peacocks.
Very easy walk approx 5 miles max. We can meet at the Bradgate pub in Newtown Linford (LE6 0AE) for say 10am and lunch after at around 2pm

The forecast was bad but eventually persuaded by accuweather and packing full waterproofs everyone turned out
Chatsworth, Baslow Edge and Curbar Edge Dec 2023
Some of the motorhome group booked into Chatsworth caravan site for 2 nights. It snowed and was stunning with the stags in the mist..yes stagg ering Dom.
Tuesday and we walked into Baslow, of course stopped at the Café on the Green then up the lands to Baslow Edge, across to Curbar edge and down through the forest to Baslow.
Supper at the Devonshire arms.
Rowsley, Derwent way and Manners Wood Nov 2023
A fantastic autumnal walk 7.5miles.
Start at Peak village and walk along the very muddy Derwent way to Carlton Lees then follow the bridleway along the perimeter of the Chatsworth estate.
Climb to the old hill fort (debated site) then drop down into manners wood and the Haddon estate.
Superb walk through the beech wood eventually dropping down to Rowley.
Chatsworth kitchen in the Peak village to start and the grouse and claret to follow. Fab!!
Skeletons from the past-Oct 2023
Not to be deterred by the amber rain warning a select few met at the sheepwash carpark, Carsington.
10km hike over the hillsides with remnants of mining (Two miners arms pubs) Passing through Brassington Harboro’ rocks and under the wind turbines above Carsington.
A welcome Miners Arms in Carsington-log fires, great food complete with dog foodbank!
Millers Dale , Chee dale circuit august 23
A small group met for coffee at the old millers dale railway station. Built in 1863, a junction where people could link to Buxton off the busy London/Manchester line. The line was closed in 1968 after Lesley had used it to see her Granny!
Now a lovely coffee shop and exhibition of its past.
We walked along the monsel trail past the lime kilns opened in 1880, worked until 1944. From there to Wendy’s abseiling viaduct and down the path towards Chee dale.Enzo swam upstream to wyedale. An extremely picturesque valley cut between amazing cliffs, challenging for climbers. Uneven path meandering alongside the river with 2 sections of stepping stones (not submerged today). Ice creams at wyedale cycle hire and a quick walk back along the monsel trail including well lit tunnels.
Before we could leave Grahame insisted on demonstrating his athleticism by climbing onto the picnic tables!
So to the Anglers arms for refreshments set beside the river wye downstream after the viaducts. Competitive routing! ,,from pavement-less road walking to scrambling up onto the trail..Initiative Grahame, just ask at the pub!

Padley Gorge to Burbage Edge-June 23
Park Longshaw Estate-great coffee
Walk down round the pond and across grindleford road to padley gorge. Walk down the picturesque gorge to the water storage building, turn right and follow the woodland trail below the quarry.
After the quarry climb up onto the old railway line, past the numerous millstones to the hathersage road. Cross over and continue the trail below milestone edge, as you reach open land climb right to owl olwer tor. Follow the trail down and up onto higger tor for boulders and wonderful views. Down to burbage bridge and up onto burbage edge or take the Sheffield Country Walk until you reach the B6521, cross and follow th track back to the estate. Or better still swing by FoxHouse for refreshment.

Ilam to Manifold Valley and Back May 2023
Meet at Ilam Hall for Coffee.
Cross the manifold river and the fields to Musden grange. Take a steady long climb through musden wood-at the time full of spring flowers and wild garlic. Wander a few lanes then drop down a zigzag route to the manifold valley trail,
Follow the river hamps ( dry today much to the dogs disappointment) until you reach the isolated caravan park. Turn right at beeston tor -nesting site and cool picnic spot! then cross the field to derelict throwley hall and back to Ilam for ice creams!!

Hurt Arms, Family Tree, Up to Crich Stand and Back April 23
Hurt Arms , Ambergate
Stroll along the cromford canal flat walk from Ambergate to Whatstandwell keen for garden coffees at the Family Tree. Memories of Otis thinking he could walk on water. Refreshed and back to the canal. Shortly after a climb through the woods to cross the end of the tramway line. Then up onto crich stand where we all try to identify the landmarks! Leave Crich after the memorial across the Tors and Crich chase through Bilberry Wood and down to the A6. Hearty lunch at the Hurt Arms to follow

Christmas Progressive Feast and a little exercise Dec 22
What a start with bubbly and blinis, cheese and more courtesy of N & L. Dragging ourselves away we leave Allestree and cross over the fields to kedleston road and the bridlway to Markeaton Lane. Home made vegetable soup & bread served by H & P at the cottage. Then the delights of Markeaton Park, Darley and back for a snooze. Pre drinks with A&L follow by Christmas Food at the Red Cow ((not the best sadly) and back for coffee

Beacon Hill Explore Oct 22
Our first adventure south for a while
Meet at the end of moat road, Loughborough.
Great walk through the woods, complete with classy coffee shop. Avoiding the highland cattle up onto Beacon Hill Bar. Great views across the valley-more landmark spotting!
Back through the woods as the boys imagined their next off road cycle trip.
To finish luch at the welcoming Bulls Head in Woodhouse

Whilst getting ready to party celebrating H&W H&P 40th wedding anniversaries off we go exploring Osmaston Park

Meet at the duck pond
Along the drive, memories of James and Hannahs wedding there in June 2018. Past the mill and up the bridleway to Shirley for a coffee at the village deli. Back across the fields and past the cricket fields and the Kids camp.
6 miles , back to the Joiners Arms in Quarndon for lunch and Coach Drive with D&R for coffee
Monsal Dale, deep dale, magpie mine June 2022
Its the Thornbrige explore so coffee at thornbridge hall -they won their planning permission so can keep Quackers cafe!
Park on little longstone road near Monsel Head. If lucky the coffee shop is open! (not today) Walk down the steep slope to the valley and follow the river wye to the A6. Cross over and gradually climb deep dale -watch out for the cows-until you reach the lane and sight magpie mine to your left.
Explore the historical site-the last lead mine in Derbyshire to close. From there drop down to Sheldon and across the Ashford -for the now expected ice cream. Up the steep lane and across the well marked fields to Monsel Head. Watch out for bunny rabbits Bryn!
For refreshment back to Thornbridge land-this time the brewery for beer and pizza

Derwent Edge & Lost Lad April 22
Meet at Fairholmes CP Ladybower for Coffee of course.
En masse today 17 walkers
Having admired the Derwent Reservoir dam wall memories of scary torrents of water falling over the rocks we climb to the trail alongside the water. After a few km climb up onto the edge to Lost Lad and all the rocky sites of the edge . Back Tor, Cakes of bread, Salt cellar, white tor, wheel stones and then descend to the reservoir and back. The path is well marked and paved but in wet weather watch for sunken slabs and don’t step off into the sinking peat

Meet in Elton village.
Cross the fields over to Youlgreave past the stone circle, standing stones and castle rings-had to be Howard planning this one. Drop down to the River Lathkill (good bridge pose) along and up. Not forgetting Howard’s home made sausage rolls! Them back across the fields to Robin Hoods stride.
Lunch at the Flying Childers in Stanton in the Peak. Quaint pub known for its vege burgers.

the Covid years...2020/2021
Crazy times when we could walk local short distances with your household, but sometimes one met fellow households walking the same route, welcoming a cheery wave. Note isolation walk 1 -little eaton/duffield bankand isolation walk 2-Little Eaton/great northern greenway/chester green/darley abbey
Or you find yourselves exploring the same northumberland beach.
We all tested out future VY walks..Bardsey island, Dunster Hill, the whole llyn penisular, snowden summit, great orme climbs, lake district peaks and we started going back to pubs for a pint. (except Welsh ones that were closed on Sundays) But first we had to order a substantial meal!
Meanwhile a few of our kids hosted small weddings whilst others awaited and welcomed their babies.
But festivals continued-on zoom or in ones garden. The jokes flowed and Howards found Septimus’s gravestone.c 1920
We all became fab gardeners, upskilled our photography techniques and craft creations. The whats app chat cameraderie was amazing from day 1…23/3/2020.
I remember a small break from lockdown in the summer of 2020 when new motorhomes were tested, new puppies purchased, we hosted a wedding for 30, glastonbury moved to ladycroft paddock, everyone competed for the largest courgette and the vegetable jokes started. It started with the songs for our not yet happened VY garden show..red courgette by quince, twist and sprout, swede caroline, pepper don’t peach by marrowdonna, silence is golden delicious, bohemian raspberry…we were already going crazy!
May 2020, hoping we could all hug again soon, we settled for a zoom quiz-hosted by Paul and Hazel and won by Rose and Martin! Despite lockdown we welcomed them as new VY members

But we were defeated by snow and hail!

Little longstone, cresswell and monsel dale Sept 2019
Park for free on the lane to little longstone, ideal for the packhorse inn.
Turn left and take the lanes above longstone, to Longstone edge. past the quarry then drop down though Cresswell past the mill and then race along the dale cos we were late. The cameras were out for slowmo waterfalls!

Dom’s favourite walk!
Park across from the Miners standard above Winster. Walk down into the village cutting down the steep alley ways. Across past the village shop and into the meadows. Follow the trail up and down to the Birchover campsite (barn Farm) then up onto Stanton moor with Rowter rocks, Earl Grey tower the none ladies standing stones circle. from there drop down to the druids inn at Birchover
Oicnic at the foot of rbin hoods stride and follow the narrow road back to the cars

Across the fields to climb thorpe cloud then drop into dovedale for the stepping stones, across the meadows to Ilam and then follow the river manifold across the fields before turning towards thorpe village
